Introduction to online communication

silver and gold steel tool Alongside education and research, knowledge institutions are increasingly focussed on creating societal impact. At universities, this is known as valorisation, whereas Dutch Universities of applied science refer to it as 'doorwerking': the effect that research has on society. Communication—particularly online communication—plays a vital role in achieving societal impact.

Knowledge institutions have embraced online communication, not only as a means of communicating and collaborating but also in shaping the perception of education, research, and researchers within society. Researchers play an important role in explaining their research and linking it to societal issues. As a professional, you are required to not only convey the content of your work, but also to share insights about your field and your approach, both of which can make significant impact.

Researchers serve as ambassadors of both their expertise and science in general. This can have a positive impact on society, which is a big part of what it means to be researcher (or scientist). Every expert’s expertise has a place in the online debate.

Through online communication, you create societal impact and take control of the debates surrounding your subjects.
